Read Chapters 11-15 in "Orbiting the Giant Hairball"

Write down what your favorite chapter was in your CPB.  Come prepared to share what you learned from your favorite chapter.  How can you apply these things to your life?

Read "ECHO" by Pam Munoz Ryan.  It's super fun to listen to this book!  It has some fun music involving the harmonica!

Bring Your Harmonica's!  AND Bring your music that Sister Fontano and Sister Martin have given to you!

SEWING:  We will have one more sewing class.  This will take place during the Master's hour, after we have discussed and had fun with the books we have read.  Sign up HERE for a sewing project.  Please sign up by Wednesday!

Remember, if you want to stay and have fun with us, but you don't want to sew, you can bring a project of your own, but you must be engaged.  You can also make a something for a gift!  All of these make great gifts!

Read/Study:

1.  Go sign up HERE for your Culture assignment.  If you'll remember, we talked about this last time we met.  Some of you signed up already.  Others of you need to go sign up, or go check what you signed up for.  You or your group will present on your topic for approximately 5-10 minutes each.  The instructions are on the google doc for the segment that you sign up for.  We will be having a Vanguard Dance soon!  I'm excited to learn some of these dances!

2.  Make sure you have finished reading the Apprentice book of the month is "A Distant Prayer" by Jerry Borrowman.

3.  Define these terms and write an example of each term:  
onomatopoeia
interjection
contraction
conjunction

4.  Make sure you have contacted your movie groups!  Be prepared to start filming!  You only have 2 class times left!  Maybe 3, and then we will have our movie premiere night with our families.


Know/Understand:

1. I LOVE wordplay!  It's fun to know what the difference is between all these parts of speech!  We are going to play a little game with the homophones, make sure you know what those are!  Make a list of all the homophones you can think of.  Our game will be kind of like boggle, when we get to class we will read off what we have, and if someone else has the same set, you have to cross yours out.  Whoever has the most uncrossed out homophones wins!  Your list should be as long as possible.  This is the writing assignment!  You don't have to turn it into your mentors! (I have a really long list, over 100)  Try to beat me!

2. Memorize either the Scripture, the quote, or both:

3.  Penmanship:  Go read  this article on Penmanship. Write in your best handwriting (maybe even cursive), on a piece of nice looking paper, the scripture and quote above or a scripture and quote that you love.  Think about how you could improve your handwriting from last time.  Bring your paper to class to hang above your name.  What did you think of the article?

Become/Serve:

Did you light the world during the holidays?  How can you honor Jesus Christ throughout the year and continue lighting the world?  Make a list of things you can do daily, weekly, or monthly to light the world.  Start doing those things!  Lets make a world that is light with giving and serving.

Masters:  Read "Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass."

We will discuss these books before we begin sewing. Write down your favorite quote from the book.  Memorize it and come prepared to share it. Also, come prepared to tell us your favorite part of the story and why.

A quick note:  We will sew again this month, but then we may be switching things up again next time we meet.  So, if you wanted to do a sewing project, now is the time!  There are new projects listed!  Go Here to sign up for your sewing!

Remember, if you read the books, but don't want to sew, you can come with your own project, or I will have a service project there if you want to work on that.

IMPROV/Descriptive Essay



Read/Study:

                  

1- Watch this Improv Video.  
My friend Leah did a wonderful job introducing improv.  We will do a few more fun games using our skills in class.  Practice looking at people in the eye and building each other up.  Remember to make people look good!


2- Make sure you have finished reading "Call of the Wild."


3- Note cards:  Define the following words,
essay, fiction, non-fiction, imagery, metaphor, simile 

4- Make sure you have made contact with your movie group!  You should be almost ready to start some filming.  Bring your props and costumes and anything else you need.  Also, Please go fill out this Google Doc with all the information for your group.  If you don't know the information, then please get it figured out!


Know/Understand:

1- Descriptive Writing:  Go learn more about descriptive writing here. 

Option A: Choose a person that is important to you!  It could be a family member, friend, someone in history, church leader, neighbor, etc... Write a descriptive essay about this person. Describe this person in as much detail as possible.  Describe their facial features, expressions, clothes, appearance, etc...  Who are they and how do they impact you? 

OR

Option B: Choose your favorite food, animal, sport, or something like that and do a descriptive essay.  Describe this thing in as much detail as possible.  You want to make your readers understand all the emotions that go with describing your favorite thing! Use the ideas given on the descriptive writing page.

OR

Option C: Select an object:  Modes of transportation, plants and flowers, furniture in a room, or buildings in a city, etc...Write a scenario that brings the object or other objects to life by seeing the world through their eyes.


Your essay this month needs to be at least 1 page typed in 12-14 point font.  Turn your essay into your writing mentor.

You may also continue to work on your short story from last month.  You should have turned it in and received some feedback.  Your mentors are there to help you become a better writer!  Keep improving!  They are reporting to me or Sister Fontano about who has turned them in.

                  

2-  Memorization:  Memorize either the scripture or the quote or both.

Imaginative Arts Journeyman/Masters

These classes will be kind of combined because we need more time for sewing!  There will be easy sewing projects that can be done in an hour, or projects that can be done in 2 hours, or projects that will take a few classes to complete.  You must complete the reading and assignments for Journeyman for the first hour and for Masters if you want to stay to work on your projects during the second hour.

If you want to do the assignments and bring your own project to work on, that is acceptable.  You do not have to sew.  You can also come and work on service projects that we don't finish in apprentice.  You DO need to have something to keep you busy and engaged.  We will discuss our reading while we work!


READ/STUDY:

Journeyman

1- Read Chapters 1–5 of Orbiting the Giant Hairball by Gordon MacKenzie

Write down your thoughts in your CPB as you read Orbiting the Giant Hairball.

Write a journal entry on what you think about the book.

Masters
1- Read Alice in Wonderland. (It's Short) We will read Through the Looking Glass next month.

Journal in your commonplace book about your favorite Character from the book and why they are your favorite. 

Go to the Google Doc to sign up for Sewing Projects. Please Sign up by Tuesday Night so that I can gather all the supplies we will need.  Also, if you want to do a medium or big project, you will need time to shop for your fabric.

            2-Watch this short video on film. 

         
            3-Watch this clip on Steven Spielberg's Advice.    After watching, journal about things that                 you have felt whisper to your mind or heart. Do you feel that people have a personal                       responsibility to follow these whisperings or promptings they receive?
            
           4- Watch your favorite movie. Take notes on at least 3 things you like about the movie and                  why. Bring this to class so we can hear what your favorite movie is and share in your joy.

           5- Make sure you have finished the Apprentice book of the month, Huckleberry Finn.

KNOW/UNDERSTAND:

             1-  Write a Short Story!  Here are some basic steps for writing a short story.
Step 1: Think of an idea. (What happened to you yesterday?,  A great childhood story., A story about a grandparent., An animal story., A scary story., A funny Story.)
Step 2: Create a character and a setting.
Step 3: The Beginning. 
Step 4: The Conflict. 
Step 5: The Turning Point. 
Step 6: The Resolution. 
Step 7: The End.

It needs to be at least 1 page typed in 12-14 point font size.  Turn in your short story to your writing mentor. (assigned on vision day)

Bring a ball of yarn to class!  We will work on a service project during our book discussion.  If you have more yarn that you can donate, that would be wonderful!

Every time someone shares an idea with you, make an effort to be encouraging and supportive. Write down how it makes you and the other person feel. Bring that experience to class.

or

     Every time you have an idea, write it down!  Lets see how many ideas you have.  I know I have a ton of ideas, but I tend to keep them in my head and then they get forgotten.  Let's remember all of our great ideas!
