DO ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

• Read Chapter 5  in the drawing textbook.  Do all of the drawings 8 times.  Bring your best ones to show
• Read pages 84-106 in "Put a Cherry on Top".  Color one of the drawings in the book
• Draw or paint a picture of your favorite Norse god. Or create a Norse helmet out of cardboard or whatever you want, and make it fun and cool, DON’T BORE SISTER FONTANO
• Come to class prepared to share your art or helmet

February Master Class

Norse Mythology

Please remember that in  order to attend Master class you must have completed all the work for Journeyman and Apprentice.  Also you must finish ALL of the Master work.  Be honest with yourself and with your classmates.  Masters is awesome, I hope you are all trying to get there.  We love having you!

Study and Learn

• Read 10 stories of Norse Mythology. You can find these at the library or online
• Find out where we got the names for our days of the week

• Do a Hero Study on one of the following Fairy Tale authors: (Look in the tool box on the blog if you don't know what this is) Come ready to share what you have learned. Let me know who you choose so we don't double up.

Become and Serve

• You are invited to attend a feast at the legendary Valhalla in Asgard.  Come dressed as a Norse God of your choice.  Be ready to regale us with  your many adventures and stories.  The god Heimdall, the keeper of the rainbow bridge will know if you are an imposter, make sure you know your stories well.

February 2nd Class

Everyone stays all day this week!  Bring a lunch and plan to be there!

We are hearing a presentation from Kaiden Cloward on his mission to India, discussing the reading and the book "Seven Daughters and Seven Sons" (so make sure you've finished it!) and visiting the Krishna Temple in Salem.

We would like to do a tasting table of Indian food.  Please bring an Indian dish per family that day.  The Clowards will bring the basmati rice, so if you're dish is served on rice, there will be some there.

Please dress warm, we will be outside at the Krishna Temple and last year it was really cold.

And don't forget to bring your artifact for your culture that day, too.    Please connect with your culture group and make sure your culture is complete.  It's time to bury them!

3 - Read this excerpt from the Bhagavad Gita, one of the holy books of Hinduism

4 - Read at least one of the following articles:  (for a more complete understanding of Hinduism, you can read all of these articles)

Know/Understand

1 - Meditation is key element in the Eastern religions we have been studying.  What does God say in our LDS scriptures about meditation?  Is it even mentioned?   Sit somewhere quiet for 10 minutes.  Try to clear your mind and just be.  Was it hard or easy?  What could you do differently next time to make it better?  Is this something you would like to have more of in your life?

2 - Make a list of at least 5 of the teaching from Hinduism and find scriptures from our LDS scriptures that teach the same thing.  Bring your list to class and be prepared to discuss.

3 - Prepare (or talk your mom into preparing) vegetarian meals for ONE WHOLE DAY this week.  Vegetarians don't eat meat or use meat products.  Bring the recipes for what you ate to share with the class.  Could you eat this way all the time?  Why or why not?

In 1986, in discussing our relationships with other people, Elder George I. Cannon quoted an old Hindu proverb that says,

“Help thy brother’s boat across, and lo, thine own has reached the shore.”

What do you think this proverb means?  What does it mean to you?  Journal for 15 minutes on how you can better apply the principle taught in this proverb in your own life and then set a goal to do this week to better serve others.

3.  Research the art of India.  Replicate one of the styles you see and bring your art to class to show.

Come prepared to spend the full day at Vanguard.  We will not have people go home after apprentice.

• Finish "Archimedes and the Door of Science".  Come prepared to talk about it.

• Read the myth Pygmalion, found here

• Watch the movie "My Fair Lady"

• Make a Venn Diagram (click here to get more information) comparing and contrasting Pygmalion and My Fair Lady  

• Create an Olympic event for the class.  We are having our first Olympics during class. Come prepared to participate (tennis shoes and jacket).  We will compete in all the events you create.  Have Fun, some examples are: bubblegum blowing, three legged race, egg races, memory with the notecards. Just remember your need to bring whatever supplies you need.  Feel free to make them mental not just physical.

Read 3 Aesops Fables and illustrate your favorite fable.

Research the symbolism of our  money.  Come ready to present on some of the symbols that you found interesting.

2. Write in your Common place books your thoughts on this movie.  Were things portrayed in Egypt  as you had imagined them or were things portrayed "wrong?"

1.  Dress up!  Get the eyeliner out!  Come and walk like an egyptian!  Be brave!

Study and learn

1. Read Put a Cherry on Top pages 1-10
2. Read pages 1-18 in The Drawing Textbook by Bruce McIntyre

Know and Understand

1. Do drawing lesson 1.  Divide the page into 8 sections.  Draw each object at least 8 times.
2. Cut out your best one from each page. Put each of your best drawing onto one page.
3. Bring the page you created with the birthday cake, T.V., candle, ect to class to hang on the wire.
4. Come ready to discuss Put a cherry on Top.
5. Answer  3 of these questions for your own history and write them down. Decide where to put these, in a journal, computer, scrapbook- make a safe place to store the family history you will be writing or collecting this year.  Remember what you learned about quality paper and ink.

• What did you do to celebrate your first birthday? Ask your parents.
• Why did your parents choose your name?
• What is the earliest memory you have?
• What is your favorite food? include a recipe if possible.
• What is a funny story from your childhood?
• What are 5 words that describe you? What words would your parents use? Ask them.

1. How do you feel about art? Do you see it as a skill that is worth working on? Journal in your commonplace book for 10 minutes.

1. Read either the Red Pyramid or Stone Tables.  If you have already read either book you must choose the other.  Don't worry they are both good.
