Journeyman/Masters For March 2

 Play Practice Day!

Journeyman:

Everyone stays for journeyman!  We are running the play one more time after lunch!  Continue to work on your lines.

Masters:

1. Watch the movie Harriet.  Here is the trailer:

You can rent it for $3.99 on Prime

This movie is powerful, and a bit heavy, just because of the topic of slavery.  But I feel it's well worth your time.

2. Look up quotes by Harriet Tubman.  Some have to do specifically with slavery, but some are about her relationship with God, or other such inspiring quotes.  Find one that inspires you and make it artistic.

Some ideas:

  • Write it nicely, and decorate the page
  • Use a picture as a background, and type your quote on it.
  • Be creative with it, and bring a physical copy to class.  We'll hang them by our quilt squares.
We hope to see everyone at Master's this week!

IMAGINATIVE ARTS Apprentice - guitar/ukulele class and PLAY STUFF for MARCH 2 CLASS

FYI The assignments, for our play, are the very highest priority!

 GUITAR/UKULELE CLASS

UPDATE: Keep working on these assignments, but we will revisit this class after the play is over. Your main homework for this part of the class is to practice your instrument for 12 minutes a day.

1. Be prepared with a song to play in class. You may choose a new song or continue working on your current song.  Please text me with what you choose.

2. Practice 12 minutes daily, meaning 5 days a week, more is fine if you like, I'm only asking for 5.

3. Fill out the practice calendar and answer the questions on the calendar.

Print this CALENDAR or find your own.

HOMEWORK FOR THE PLAY

This is your highest priority!!!

1. Memorize your LINES and review all of your BLOCKING.

2. Learn the GROUP SONGS, use the tracks in this post.

Curses, opening number

I’ll be contacting smaller groups to work on their songs

3. Bring your COSTUMES to class on March 2, plan to wear them for the rehearsal.

4. Find PROPS that your character will use.  PLEASE talk to me if you need help with this! Maybe team up with a fellow Vanguardian and work on your props together.

In class in March we will be running the whole show, costumes, props, everything.

Imaginative Arts Masters Week 3 - January 2023

Imaginative Arts Masters Week 3 - January 2023

Read the book The Stories of Joseph Smith.

This book is so timely for our day.  Joseph Smith is often misunderstood and misrepresented.  This book so beautifully written, and has definitely strengthened my testimony of the legitimacy of our 1st latter day prophet.  Hopefully it will for you as well.

Come prepared to share your favorite story (or miracle) from the book.

Imaginative Arts Journeyman Week 3 - January 2023

Imaginative Arts Journeyman Week 3 - January 2023

Hopefully you're stoked to make these journals!

Those who didn't start yet, you still have time!  I'd love to see you all make a really cool journal this year.  You'll need to have your leather and paper ready like everyone else, but it's not too late to start! Look at the leadership journeyman blog for paper details.

We have a guest coming THIS WEEK to teach us how to sew our journals.

Watching the last 5 minutes of the video will help you have an idea of what we'll be doing.  But she'll have some additional insights and tips, so you don't need to start sewing at home.

 1. Come to class with your paper cut, placed into signatures, and punched.  Before you punch, make your paper punch template out of cardstock, so you punch in the correct places.  Watch the 1st 12 minutes of this Leather Journal Video if you need a reminder.  I watched the template part a couple times to make sure I got mine right.  It's not hard, just take your time measuring correctly, so your signatures are ready to sew into your leather correctly.

2.  Come to class with your leather punched correctly.  The details on how to do this correctly is also in the first 12 minutes of the video.  In the video, he makes enough lines for 6 signatures.  You will only makes as many lines on your template as signatures you have.  Your template helps you punch the holes in your leather correctly.

3. Watch the last 5 minutes of the Leather journal video, so you know what to expect on Thursday. It will help the process go more smoothly.

4. Bring a pair of pliers to class to help with the stitching.  Also, remember to bring your paper and and leather!

We'll have the thread and needles here for you.

Imaginative Arts - Guitar/Ukulele Class for January 26, 2023 and some PLAY STUFF

This class is a little different than the others because you need to practice regularly to see progress, not just practice during the week leading up to this class. 🤯

BUT I think some of you are leaving your practicing until the week of class, so I will try to make my expectations very clear in this post.

So your homework for the guitar/ukulele class will now include practicing EACH WEEK, more like daily.

I have mentioned before that you are expected to be practicing consistently, so this shouldn’t be a surprise.

The main difference is I will be giving you a calendar each month for you to fill out and you need to turn in to me at the Imaginative Arts Class.

January homework, there are three things:

1. Practice guitar or ukulele for  just 12 minutes every day. (You may do more it you like.) Mark you calendar “Practiced 12 minutes” or “Practiced 18 minutes” etc.

BUT. . . . . WHAT IF you don’t feel like practicing or don’t want to, Fine. Just hold your guitar or ukulele in your hands for 12 minutes each day. You can mark that on you calendar like this,  “held ukulele for 12 minutes” It is really important that you have the instrument  in your hands every day!

(READ THIS CAREFULLY There may be some kind of contest for marking your calendar, maybe a prize, you’ll have to see.) 🤷‍♀️ 😎 👍

2. Write 5 benefits of playing an instrument. You can even write these on the calendar that you track your practicing on.

You can use the calendar I’m including in the post or find your own.

3. Be prepared to play a song for the class, you can choose, any song, but I need to approve it BEFORE class, so decide soon and check with me so you don’t have to change your song later.

Ok! That is the homework for the Guitar/Ukulele Class.

But what if you are thinking. . . “Ughhh! I don’t know how to play and I’ll never get better even if I practice.”

Guess what?!  Not true. If you try a little every day, you can not fail! This is doable!! Even if you have been putting in the bare minimum to this point, you can still do this THIS YEAR!

You just need to do a little EACH DAY!  That’s it!

“By small and simple things, great things shall come to pass.”

HOMEWORK FOR THE PLAY.

1. WORK TO MEMORIZE YOUR LINES.

(There will be Vanbucks if your songs and lines are memorized by February 16th.)

2. REVIEW THE BLOCKING.

YOU STUDENTS ARE AWESOME!!!

Please reach out if you have questions.
